How to Install Artificial Turf on Dirt and Soil

If you are wondering if artificial turf is something you can do yourself (DIY), you might ask, “How do you install it?” The good news: with the right planning and tools, you can install your artificial turf grass. Check if artificial grass carpets are allowed if you rent or live in an HOA. Some HOAs do not allow the installation of artificial grass.

Preparing for Artificial Turf Installation

Step 1: Prepare a base for turf grass

You’ll need to install artificial turf on soil or dirt. With a shovel remove any obstacles such as pine needles, roots, or mulch that may affect the artificial turf. Dig out existing soil to a depth of 2-1/2 inches.

Step 2: Install a Weed barrier under the turf grass

Install a weed barrier to prevent weeds from growing on the artificial turf and penetrating its underside. A weed barrier should be strong enough to hold weeds back and porous to allow drainage.

Roll the weed barrier over the aggregate base, and trim as necessary. Make sure that the correct side is facing upwards. Each fabric length should be overlapped along the perimeter. Every few feet, secure it with landscape anchors or a 6-inch galvanized nail.

Step 3: Add Aggregate

After the base has been cleared, properly prepared, and the weed barrier installed, add an aggregate layer, such as crushed stone or gravel, to create the desired shape. Are you unsure of what type of aggregate to use for your base? Ask a Lowe’s employee for help.

Step 4: Smooth, rake, and tamp the aggregate

Use a rake to work the aggregate, spreading it with the fork and smoothing it using the flat side. Use a screed for a smoother surface. Compact the aggregate with a tamper. A plate compactor is ideal for larger areas.

Step 5: Trimming the grass

After the base has been prepared, place the artificial grass over the aggregate. Be careful not to drag the synthetic turf rug over the newly prepared surface. This part of the installation is much easier with an extra pair of hands.

Trim the grass using a utility knife sharp enough to cut it into your desired shape. To ensure that the entire area is covered, cut the grass a little larger than where you plan to install it. Trim any excess grass you don’t require.

Step 6: Seam the edges of turf grass and secure them

You’ll need a seamer to join two rolls of artificial grass together. Align the edges of two artificial grass pieces at their seams. Seaming tape (also known as artificial lawn tape) is used to join together two pieces of artificial turf. Lay seaming fabric along the length of the seam. Secure the seaming fabric with landscape nails or galvanized 6-inch nails using a hammer.

Step 7: Connect the seams and apply adhesive

Trowel the outdoor carpet adhesive onto the seaming fabric. Spread the adhesive evenly along the seaming fabric to avoid uneven spots.

Wait 10 minutes for the adhesive to dry. Slowly begin to reassemble the two artificial grass sections. Check the fit of the seam as you work to ensure there are no gaps.

Step 8: Install the artificial turf grass

Once the grass has been laid, ensure that it is taut and level. To keep your lawn flat, use landscape anchors or galvanized 6-inch nails around the perimeter. Cut off any grass that overlaps the edge with a utility blade.

Step 9: Spread the Infill and brush it with a Brush

Spread infill such as silica over the whole surface to help weight down the artificial turf. To prevent the artificial grass from becoming matted, infill is spread deep into it. Work the sand in with a landscape rake or a broom with stiff bristles. This will help the grass fibers to stand and give your lawn a uniform appearance. Work in the same direction to maintain a uniform look. It’s now time to relax, enjoy, and take in your new, low-maintenance, beautiful lawn.
